Starlet sold by Birmingham City in 2023 nears Newcastle United breakthrough as academy produces another new star

Birmingham City boast one of the most productive academies in the country, and another of their former prospects is well and truly on the up.

Birmingham City have seen plenty of youth prospects come through the ranks to play for the first-team in recent years.

Of the current squad, Wales international and rumoured Leicester City target Jordan James is the headline name. The likes of George Hall and Alfie Chang have also tasted senior action while prodigies like Romelle Donovan are tipped for success in the years to come.

Others have gone on to take their talents elsewhere though. Bellingham brothers Jude and Jobe both broke through at St. Andrew’s before taking their talents elsewhere, but some have moved on at academy level without making a break with the Blues.

Among those is teenage winger Trevan Sanusi, a 16-year-old winger who left Birmingham City to join Newcastle United last summer. He’d starred in youth football with the Championship club and was named in a matchday squad towards the end of last season but ultimately, he decided to take his talents to the north east.

And there, Sanusi is already making waves…

Who is this?

Another Blues product set for the top

Sanusi has regularly stood out for Newcastle United’s U18 side, managing two goals and two assists in 14 games. He’s also tested himself in the UEFA Youth League against European prospects and has made three PL2 appearances.

Amid his eye-catching displays, Chronicle Live has reported that Sanusi has already impressed first-team boss Eddie Howe in senior training sessions. In turn, it is said that he could even make a senior debut before the end of the current campaign.

It would mark a remarkable rise over the course of a year for Sanusi. He’s poised to be handed a professional deal when he turns 17 in April, marking another big step forward for the youngster.

Ultimately, Birmingham City will have hoped Sanusi would cut his teeth under their watch. They’ve shown a constant willingness to give top talents first-team opportunities and the club will have been viewing him as a player they could perhaps land a big fee for in the years to come.

Nevertheless, Sanusi’s move to Newcastle United has been more than justified. His talents have shone through in less than a year and after taking the gamble to leave an esteemed academy, the move could be rewarded with a first-team debut at the highest level of the English game.

The success of Sanusi further highlights the brilliant work going on in the Blues’ academy though. From the scouts who unearthed the talented winger to those who have coached him and managed his development, the academy remains a shining light and can be looked at as a foundation for the club to keep building on in the future.
