Sheffield Wednesday man withdraws from international duty due to injury

Sheffield Wednesday loanee Ian Poveda has had to withdraw from international duty due to injury, the club have confirmed.

Sheffield Wednesday are ultimately in a relegation scrap as things stand. They sit in 23rd in the table, but are just one point from safety with eight games left to play.

They have had an upturn in form of late, winning five of their last eight games. But they will need more in order to maintain their Championship status for another season.

Poveda’s loan signing from Yorkshire rivals Leeds United at the start of February had proved to give the Owls some impetus, and so seeing him go off injured in the 6-0 defeat to Ipswich Town on Saturday will have been concerning.

Despite this he was set to travel for international duty with his native Colombia, but he has since had to withdraw given the muscle injury he picked up at Portman Road. The club confirmed the news via their official website.

It is not known how long the 24-year-old is expected to be out for. Yet supporters will be hoping he can use the international break as a means of getting back to full fitness ahead of the final run-in.

A concern with a silver lining for Sheffield Wednesday

Of course it seems to be concerning that Poveda’s injury not only forced him to withdraw from the game at the weekend, but also from international duty with Colombia.

However, the fact that this injury has come at this time is somewhat of a silver lining for Sheffield Wednesday. If the muscle strain isn’t as bad as first feared the international break has come at the perfect time for both the club and for the player.

He can now use these next couple of weeks as a road to recovery, and although he misses the opportunity to play for his country in upcoming friendlies, he may not have to miss any time with his loan club if he recovers in time.
