Newcastle United scout watches Sunderland v QPR amid midfielder interest

Sunderland vs QPR was attended by Newcastle United scout Mick Tait, as per Chronicle Live, with the Magpies recently linked with Black Cats talent Chris Rigg.

Sunderland and Newcastle United might be arch rivals but that hasn’t stopped the latter from taking an interest in one of the Black Cats’ top talents. The Magpies are among those with eyes on teenage midfielder Rigg.

Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea have also been credited with interest.

At just 16, Rigg has played 13 times in the Championship this season. He netted in the thrashing of Southampton in the early stages of the campaign too.

The Sunderland academy prospect was in action again over the weekend, coming on off the bench as they claimed the first point of Mike Dodds’ interim tenure. The Black Cats played out a 0-0 draw with QPR with Rigg playing 32 minutes.

Now, while Chronicle Live reports that the brief of senior Newcastle United scout Mick Tait will be kept close to his chest, he was in attendance at the Stadium of Light amid rumoured interest in Rigg.

Who is this?

Holding onto key talents

Sunderland are no strangers to interest in their top prospects. Be it youth players who are yet to make a breakthrough or talents like Rigg who have appeared in the first-team picture, the academy has produced plenty of players who have gone on to attract interest from elsewhere.

Given the Black Cats’ own ambitions of eventually returning to the Premier League once more, they’ll be keen to retain the services of their key youngsters.

However, with Newcastle United among those keen on Rigg, they could face a battle to retain his services. Top clubs are keen on offering him the chance to jump up to the top and Sunderland might struggle to persuade him to stay.

Time will tell if the Magpies were in attendance to watch the teenage midfielder but come the summer, it seems inevitable that the interest in Rigg picks up.
