Arsenal, Newcastle United among clubs to eye Swansea City teenager

Swansea City teenager Aimar Govea had interest from Arsenal, Newcastle United, Brighton, Southampton and La Liga clubs before penning a new deal, as per Wales Online.

Swansea City have a handful of academy developed players currently in their ranks. Ben Cabango, Liam Cullen, Oliver Cooper, Cameron Congreve and Azeem Abdullai are all youth graduates.

There are a string of hopefuls currently plying their trade in the academy. Some will go on to make names for themselves with the Swans while others could be tempted away from the Championship side to join clubs higher up the ladder.

However, one starlet who has opted against a switch elsewhere is 17-year-old Aimar Govea.

Swansea City confirmed on Monday that the Ecuadorian teenager had penned his first professional contract with the club and in the wake of the announcement, it has emerged that the winger had drawn high-profile interest from elsewhere.

Wales Online states Arsenal, Brighton and Southampton all showed strong interest in Govea. Newcastle United and several unnamed La Liga clubs also made tentative enquiries, it is said.

Who is this?

Faith in the Swans

The report adds that Govea was keen on staying with Swansea City as he feels it is the best place for his development. There’s a feeling that he could break into the first-team picture over the next year or so too.

That show of faith in the club can only make for encouraging reading for supporters. A sought-after prospect player trusts the South Welsh outfit with his development and given that he’s highly-rated in the youth ranks, it’s not out of the question that he follows the well-trodden path to senior football with the club.

At 17, Luke Williams and the academy staff at Swansea will be keen to manage Govea’s development carefully but as the Ecuador youth international looks to keep taking steps forward, it might not be long before he can earn a chance at senior level.

Those who were keen on Govea will be hoping they’re not left to rue they fact they weren’t able to tempt him away from Swansea City.
