3 Sean Longstaff alternatives Leeds United should eye amid Newcastle United midfielder link

Leeds United are said to be considering Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff as a summer transfer target in the event of promotion to the Premier League.

Leeds United were linked in the Sunday Mirror (17/03/24, page 66) and are said to be willing to spend up to £15m on Newcastle United man Longstaff.

He’s out of contract in 2025 but has played a regular role this season. Despite his frequent starts though, Longstaff is one of the Magpies more sellable assets given his status as a homegrown player.

It would be wise for the Whites to consider potential alternatives though. With that said, here are three other central midfield options Leeds United should have on their radar…

Jordan James – Birmingham City

19-year-old midfielder James looks destined for a step up to a higher league sooner rather than later and in the event of promotion, he could be a great target for Leeds United.

Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Atalanta have all been keen but the Whites should consider joining the chase. He has eight goals in 36 Championship games for Birmingham City this season.

Amadou Haidara – RB Leipzig

Haidara is perhaps the most ambitious inclusion of the three but he could be a real statement signing upon a return to the Premier League. Like Longstaff, his deal is up in 2025 so it could be a good chance for Leipzig to cash in.

The 26-year-old mainly plays as a central midfielder but can play deeper as a defensive midfielder or out on the right if needs be too.

Who is this?

Laszlo Benes – Hamburger SV

Benes might not be the most eye-catching option as a 26-year-old playing in 2. Bundesliga. However, he’s played plenty of football in Germany’s top tier over the years and 25 goal contributions in 25 games this season has proven he’s a level above second-tier football.

The midfielder has 14 goals and 11 assists this season and after nearly eight years in Germany, a chance in England with Leeds United could be appealing.
