Tottenham Hotspur join race to sign in-demand Sunderland starlet

Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg is a player in demand and Tottenham Hotspur are the latest side to be linked, according to Chronicle Live.

Sunderland had hopes of securing a top six spot but those hopes look to be all but over as things stand. Now in 12th place in the table they are 13 points off the play-offs and just nine points above the relegation zone.

With the season seeming all but over for the Black Cats they could soon start to give players on the peripheries more first-team opportunities. Supporters will likely want to see a particular name on the teamsheet more than most, that of 16-year-old Rigg.

Having been given his debut at 15 years old, the midfielder has since made 17 appearances for the senior side, scoring two goals during that time. But with his high potential and by making an impression in the first-team, he has unsurprisingly seen him linked with a move away from the Stadium of Light.

The likes of Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United were all previously linked, whilst Newcastle United are reportedly leading the chase. Now according to Chronicle Live, Tottenham Hotspur are the latest side to be linked.

Imperative Sunderland tie Rigg down

Sunderland are hopeful that Rigg signs his first pro deal when he turns 17, although this is not a guarantee. It is vitally important they get him to put pen to paper on a pro contract.

Not only will Rigg be worth far more in the future if they do want or need to sell further down the line, but he could become a permanent fixture in the first-team fold and be a long-term option for the Black Cats instead.

The sides interested could look to strike a deal on the cheap if Rigg doesn’t agree a contract with Sunderland. Only a compensation fee would be due if not, and so the Championship outfit will have their fingers crossed this does not materialise.
