Portsmouth in contract talks with player wanted elsewhere, deal up this summer

Portsmouth are in talks with goalkeeper Toby Steward over a new deal, as per a report by The News.

Portsmouth are keen to keep hold of the youngster with his current contract up at the end of this season.

Steward, 19, has been on loan at Gosport Borough in non-league over recent times.

The News claim he is attracting ‘interest’ from elsewhere at the moment, with Premier League side Sheffield United mentioned as a club who have watched him in the past.

Securing fresh terms for Steward would be a boost for Portsmouth as they chase down automatic promotion from League One.

He is a decent age, has the potential to grow and develop in the future and has been getting valuable game time under his belt at Gosport this term.

John Mousinho’s side gave him the green light to link up with the Southern League Premier Division South outfit last August and he has since made the number one spot his own at The Aerial Direct Stadium.

Steward is due to return to his parent club when this campaign ends and they will have a decision to make on what to do with him in the next transfer market, assuming he pens an extension in the near future.

Another loan away at a higher level could be the next step for him and his development.

The stopper has been on the books at Fratton Park for his whole career to date and has risen up through their academy ranks. He signed professional terms back on his 17th birthday.

Mousinho’s men are top of the table as they eye a return to the Championship. They won 1-0 away at Peterborough United over the weekend with Kusini Yengi scoring the winner on 77 minutes.

Pompey are nine points above 3rd place Bolton Wanderers and five above 2nd position Derby County with seven matches left to play. Next up is a trip to Wycombe Wanderers away after the international break as they look to keep their strong form going.
