Middlesbrough have held new contract talks with highly-rated summer signing

Middlesbrough have held ‘initial talks’ with defender Rav van den Berg over a new contract, as detailed in a report by The Northern Echo.

Middlesbrough swooped to land the centre-back last summer and he has since impressed.

Van den Berg, 19, penned a deal until June 2027 with the Championship side.

However, as per The Northern Echo, he is being ‘monitored’ by clubs in Europe and Michael Carrick’s side are keen to tie him down on ‘new and improved’ terms in an attempt to keep hold of him.

Middlesbrough in initial contract talks

Van den Berg has made 34 appearances in all competitions for Middlesbrough this season, 29 of which have come in the league, and he has chipped in with a single goal from the back.

Despite his young age, he has become one of the club’s most prized assets and looks to have a bright future ahead of him in the game.

HITC Sport reported earlier this month that Premier League sides Everton, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Brentford, Bournemouth and Brighton and Hove Albion have all been keeping tabs on his progress in the second tier over recent times ahead of the next transfer window.

Prior to his switch to the Riverside Stadium, he rose up through the academy ranks at PEC Zwolle.

His brother, Sepp, is on the books at Liverpool but is currently on loan at Mainz in the Bundesliga.

Van den Berg went on to play 32 games for Zwolle before making the decision to move over to England.

He hasn’t looked back since linking up with Boro and they could face a battle to keep hold of him later this year.

They are in discussions with him over extending his stay though which would be a giant boost if they managed to strike something.

Carrick’s men drew 0-0 at home to Blackburn Rovers over the weekend. They are sat in 10th place in the table.

Boro are seven points off the play-offs with eight games left to play. Next up for them is a clash against the international break away at Southampton.
