Leeds United keen on summer swoop for Newcastle United midfielder

Leeds United are considering a move for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff in the event of promotion, according to the Sunday Mirror (17/03/24, page 66).

Leeds United have their sights set firmly on an immediate return to the Premier League. They moved to the top of the Championship table at the weekend too, beating Millwall while Leicester City were in FA Cup action against Chelsea.

The Whites still have a long way to go before sealing a top-flight return. However, those behind the scenes will have an eye on summer transfer window plans in the event of promotion.

Now, according to the Sunday Mirror, one man on their radar is Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff.

Leeds United are considering the 26-year-old as a potential option if they can win promotion from the Championship.

He’s out of contract at St. James’ Park in 2025 but early talks over a new deal have taken place. That said, the Whites are prepared to spend up to £15m if an agreement can not be reached.

Who is this?

A feasible move?

It seems feasible that Longstaff moves on from Newcastle United this summer. His contract situation could mean it’s a good chance for them to cash in and in an effort to raise funds, he’s one of their more sellable assets as a homegrown player.

That said though, it would be an ambitious swoop for Leeds United.

If the Whites are only willing to pay £15m, they might not get far with their pursuit. As touched on before, Longstaff is a homegrown player and with 136 Premier League appearances and now Champions League experience to his name, he’ll likely command a decent fee.

Even then, his 20 Premier League starts this season show he still has a role to play on Tyneside.

Time will tell if Leeds United’s rumoured interest in Longstaff develops into anything more serious. For now, the main focus is on rising to the Premier League.
