3 Sunderland players capable of stepping up to the Premier League in the future

Sunderland have endured a challenging 2023/24 campaign with their season set to fizzle out in an underwhelming end over the coming weeks.

Sunderland punched above their weight to earn a play-off spot last season and there will have been hopes of a similar feat this time around. However, familiar shortcomings and an ill-fated managerial change have prevented them from kicking on.

Nonetheless, few Championship sides can say they have a squad that matches the potential of the Black Cats’. There are several talents on Wearside who could go on to play at the top of the game.

With that said, here are three Sunderland players capable of stepping up to the Premier League in the future…

Jack Clarke

Winger Clarke looks destined for another shot at Premier League football, and it might not be long before it comes. Of course, he was previously on the books at Tottenham Hotspur, but he barely played for the North London outfit and spent much of his time on loan.

The 23-year-old has come alive with Sunderland though and now looks geared up to impress in the Premier League. Clarke has 15 goals and four assists this season and has been linked with a top-flight move on plenty of occasions.

Chris Rigg

While Clarke is a player who could move up to the Premier League this summer and have an instant impact, 16-year-old Chris Rigg’s top-flight breakthrough is perhaps a little further in the future.

The teenager has been in and around Sunderland’s first-team this season and has also drawn admiring glances from top clubs. It would not be a surprise if Rigg goes on to become a Premier League player in the coming years.

Who is this?

Dan Neil

Last but not least is academy graduate Neil, who is another who is perhaps capable of stepping up now.

22-year-old midfielder Neil broke into the side in League One and has made a place his own in the Championship. He’s a well-rounded midfield player with four goals and five assists this season and could earn a step up sooner rather than later.
