Decision in defence: Middlesbrough team news and predicted XI to face Blackburn Rovers

Middlesbrough take on Blackburn Rovers at the Riverside in the Championship this afternoon. We take a look at the home side’s team news and predict the XI.

Middlesbrough have won three in a row, one of which was their game in hand, and so now stand 9th in the table and just five points off a place in the top six.

With nine games left to play between now and the end of the season, head coach Michael Carrick will want to have as many fully fit players to choose from as he can in order to boost his side’s chances of getting the points on the board his side need to reach the play-offs.

Boro aren’t blessed with a fully fit squad as things stand however, and are missing some big hitters. Defensive quartet Tommy Smith, Darragh Lenihan, Dael Fry and Alex Bangura are all long-term absentees and won’t feature against Blackburn Rovers this afternoon.

In midfield, star man Hayden Hackney has missed the last six games through injury. Carrick had provided simultaneous injury updates for Hackney, club captain Jonny Howson and striker Emmanuel Latte Lath, but now with Howson and Latte Lath fit and firing, Hackney remains out.

Isaiah Jones has not played since January due to a hamstring injury but has been on the bench for the past three games. We could see him feature against Rovers today with 32-year-old Luke Ayling rested, despite his good form and three assists in his last three outings. Fellow academy graduate Josh Coburn won’t feature however after sitting out the previous eight Championship games.

We expect Middlesbrough to line up with the same formation as their previous three games, given their successes on the pitch. However, with Jones coming back to the bench in those games, he could be brought in at right wing-back for Ayling.

Elsewhere, there could be a need to freshen things up with a couple of tweaks such as Dan Barlaser in midfield or Finn Azaz in attacking midfield, but there is no strong demand for wholesale changes from Carrick in this one.
