‘Will work itself out’ – Michael Carrick provides update on possible permanent signing of Leeds United loanee

Middlesbrough head coach Michael Carrick has provided an update on the future of Leeds United loanee Sam Greenwood in an interview with Teesside Live.

Middlesbrough signed Greenwood in the summer transfer window as a means of helping them replace the goals of outgoing duo Chuba Akpom and Cameron Archer.

Leeds United loaned the forward out to their Championship rivals and he started the season strongly. Before the turn of the year, the 22-year-old had five goals and two assists to his name.

However, Boro’s inconsistent form from January onwards has been mirrored by Greenwood’s. He has scored no goals and registered just one assist in his last 15 in all competitions.

The Teessiders reportedly have an option to purchase the player for £1.5million, and Carrick has spoken out about the possibility of signing the Elland Road youngster on a permanent deal.

“Sam has been great. He trains unbelievably well, really enjoys it here. You can see that. Yeah, of course, he’d like to have played more over the last week or so but he’s important for us, he’s had a big impact and he’s played a big part in what we’ve done, and he will continue to do that,” he told Teesside Live.

“It’s not the time now for me to be bothering Sam on that. It’s focusing on the games. As I said with Jonny [Howson] and there are one or two others, in time it will work itself out. Timing is important with these sorts of things, with contracts and transfers. When it’s the right time things will get finalised.”

The right strategy for Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough still have an outside chance of making the play-offs this season. They currently sit in 9th in the table and are just five points off the top six. Therefore, contracts will take a backseat before their fate is sealed.

The likes of Jonny Howson and Paddy McNair are out of contract, and there will also be decisions to be made on those who have joined Boro across the campaign on loan such as Greenwood, Leeds United teammate Ayling, Leicester City‘s Luke Thomas and Nottingham Forest’s Lewis O’Brien.

Addressing the future of the club’s loanees will be looked at in the summer and for good reason. The shape of their squad will ultimately be determined by what division they are playing their football in of course.
