Sheffield Wednesday man ‘getting closer’ to return from injury as boss provides promising update

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has said Callum Paterson could return to training at the end of this month.

Sheffield Wednesday are hoping that the versatile Scotsman can be back fit for the end of season run-in as they look to preserve their Championship status.

Paterson, 29, has been out of contract recently with a knee injury and hasn’t played since December.

In this latest update regarding his condition, his manager has said, as per a report by The Star: “This week it’s a pity that he is a little bit ill, but all in all he is in the right way and he is getting closer. At first I expected him a little bit later, maybe in the April.

“But now we have spoken about maybe end of March or the start of April (back in training) and this is great to know.”

Getting Paterson back will be a big boost for Sheffield Wednesday as they look to avoid relegation to League One.

He is a dependable player who can slot in a variety of different positions which is useful.

The Owls signed him back in 2020 and he has since been a good servant to the South Yorkshire club.

He is under contract at Hillsborough until the summer of 2025 meaning he has over a year left on his deal and they don’t have to worry about his future right now.

Paterson has made 149 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday so far, 21 of which have come this term, and he has chipped in with 23 goals.

He helped them gain promotion from League One last year under former boss Darren Moore as they beat Barnsley in the play-off final at Wembley.

The former Scotland international, who made 17 caps for his country, rose up through the ranks at Hearts before moving to the Football League in 2017 for a three-year stint in Wales at Cardiff City before his switch to his current club.

Sheffield Wednesday are back in action this weekend with a tricky away trip to Portman Road to lock horns with automatic promotion chasing Ipswich Town. The trip to Suffolk comes too soon for Paterson but the upcoming international break will give him a chance to help get back up to speed.
