‘Momentum behind them’ – Wigan Athletic vs Blackpool prediction: The72

The72’s writers offer their Wigan Athletic vs Blackpool prediction ahead of the League One clash on Saturday.

Wigan Athletic head into their upcoming fixture on the back of their 1-0 loss away at Wycombe Wanderers last time out. They are sat in 13th place in the table.

Shaun Maloney’s men have eight games left to play this season. The Latics would be higher if they weren’t deducted points last year.

As for Blackpool, they are only a point outside the play-offs. They were relegated to League One last term from the Championship.

Neil Critchley returned to Bloomfield Road last summer and has done a solid job. He guided them to promotion back in 2021.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

Wigan Athletic are a decent enough side and could cause problems to Blackpool. Shaun Maloney’s men are unbeaten in their last three home games.

Their form has been pretty inconsistent recently though and they don’t really have too much to play for now.

As for the visitors, they are in a great position in the table. They could rise into the top six if they win at the DW Stadium and results elsewhere go their way.

The Tangerines have momentum behind them and have only lost once in their last six. I fancy them to win this weekend.”

Who is this?

James Ray

“Looking at this game it feels it could definitely go either way. Blackpool’s inconsistency has prevented them from thrusting themselves further into the promotion fight but one defeat in six League One games has kept them firmly in the play-off hunt.

Wigan Athletic are a good side though and at the DW Stadium, we’ve seen them take down some good teams.

“I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if the visitors take another step towards the play-offs given the momentum they’ve gathered, but I can see a setback coming here. I’ll say the hosts win 2-1.”
