Luton Town man says he had ‘concrete’ offer to leave EFL loan side in January

Luton Town attacker John McAtee has said he received a ‘concrete’ offer to move on from loan club Barnsley in January.

Barnsley swooped to land the forward on a temporary basis last summer on a deal until the end of the season.

McAtee, 24, stayed put at Oakwell in the last transfer window despite interest from elsewhere.

He has said, as per a report by The Yorkshire Post: “I had a couple interested (in January) and one concrete (offer) that I turned down.”

He added: “I really enjoy it here. I am not playing every minute, but I am playing most weeks and getting game time and it was a no-brainer. I spoke to Luton and they were happy with the progress I was making here.”

Barnsley loan ace was eyed

Keeping hold of McAtee this past winter was a big boost to Barnsley’s League One promotion hopes.

He is due to return to Luton this summer and they will have a decision to make on what to do with him next.

The Mancunian moved to his parent club back in 2022 but is yet to make an appearance for the Premier League outfit.

He spent last term on loan at Grimsby Town before switching to Barnsley last August.

McAtee has since scored 11 goals in all competitions for the Tykes as they look to get into the Championship under Neill Collins.

He rose up through the ranks at Shrewsbury Town and played twice for their first-team as a youngster, as well as having loan spells away at AFC Telford United and Curzon Ashton to get some experience.

Permanent stints at Scunthorpe United and Grimsby then followed on for him before his switch to Kenilworth Road.

Barnsley won 3-2 away at Carlisle United last time out as they remain well in the mix at the top of the third tier table.

They are back in action this weekend with a home clash against Cheltenham Town as they look to build some momentum again.
