Italian side retain interest in Leeds United star, report claims

Leeds United winger Willy Gnonto is still on the radar of Serie A side Lazio, according to a report from Italian publication Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness).

Leeds United have excelled in the Championship so far this season. They currently sit in 2nd place in the table and are the in-form side in the division ahead of the final run-in.

The summer promises to be a busy one for Daniel Farke’s side. Regardless of what division they are playing their football in next season, there are expected to be plenty of incomings and outgoings to help streamline their squad.

With their fine form in the second tier this season, there is also expected to be interest in some of their star players. Earlier in the campaign Lazio were reportedly monitoring Gnonto, although nothing materialised in the January transfer window.

Now according to Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sport Witness), the Serie A side are still keen on the 20-year-old attacker, and could make a swoop in the upcoming summer window.

Following a tumultuous first half of the season where the Italian youngster was in and out of the side, he has since come back into the first-team fold and impressed, with five goals and an assist in his last eight games.

Leeds United need to keep Gnonto

Not only is Gnonto proving to be a valuable and exciting asset for Leeds United in the short-term, but he also is likely to be a long-term option for the Whites too. Given his age, current ability and high ceiling, it is imperative the club keep him this summer.

The player has shown his worth in the Championship this season, but has also proven he can compete at the highest level with his performances in the Premier League prior to Leeds United’s relegation last term. Therefore, whether they are promoted or not he will be able to cut it.

A lot will of course depend on Leeds United’s league status however. If they don’t get promoted, the player could look to leave Elland Road, but securing promotion will make retaining him far easier.
