Barnsley in line for selection boost ahead of Cheltenham Town clash with 29-year-old pushing for return

Barnsley boss Neill Collins has said goalkeeper Liam Roberts is in ‘contention’ to return this weekend.

Barnsley are back in League One action with a home clash against Cheltenham Town.

Roberts, 29, sat out against Carlisle United last time out as the Tykes ran out 3-2 winners at Brunton Park.

In this latest update regarding his condition, Collins has said, as per a report by the Barnsley Chronicle: “He’s progressing and he will be in contention for the weekend.”

Barnsley injury boost

Getting Roberts back against Cheltenham will be a big boost for Barnsley. Ben Killip took his place between the sticks against Carlisle, with youngster Rogan Ravenhill on the bench.

The Tykes swooped to land the stopper on loan from Middlesbrough last summer and he has since made the number one spot his own at Oakwell this season, making 29 appearances in all competitions.

He is due to return to the Riverside Stadium when his temporary deal in South Yorkshire expires.

His contract with his parent club is up at the end of June and they have a decision to make regarding his long-term future.

Boro landed him back in 2022 and although he played a handful of matches last term, he has slipped down the pecking order under Michael Carrick.

Roberts is a product of the Walsall academy and played 149 games for the Saddlers earlier in his career. He also had a stint at Northampton Town during the 2021/22 campaign.

Barnsley is his home for now and he is pushing to return to their starting XI ahead of their fixture against Cheltenham. Collins’ men remain in the hunt for automatic promotion and can’t really afford any slip-ups again like their loss to Lincoln City in their last home outing.
