Opinion: Wigan Athletic should sort new contract deal for 29-year-old, future up in the air

Jordan Jones has enjoyed a new lease of life at Wigan Athletic this season.

Wigan Athletic have loaned him out to St Mirren and Kilmarnock since signing him back in 2021.

Jones, 29, returned to the DW Stadium last summer and has since become a key for Shaun Maloney’s side.

He is out of contract at the end of this campaign though and they need to hand him an extension to avoid losing him for free.

Who is this?

Wigan Athletic should keep Northern Ireland international

Not many thought Jones had a future at Wigan but he has proved a lot of people wrong this term.

The winger, who can also play at wing-back if needed, has made 32 appearances in all competitions this season and has chipped in with two goals and an impressive 10 assists.

It would be a big blow if he left the Latics when his deal expires in late June, especially for nothing, and keeping hold of him would be a huge boost.

Jones rocked up at Wigan three years ago and initially struggled to make an impact, despite the club getting promoted to the Championship in his first year.

His loan moves away gave him the chance to find his feet again in Scotland and they seem to have done him good.

Maloney gave the former Middlesbrough and Rangers man a fresh start and he has taken the opportunity with both hands.

The Latics will hope they can compete at the top end of the League One table next time around. They would be a lot higher now if it wasn’t for their points deduction last year.

Securing Jones’ future would go a long way to helping them achieve their goal of returning to the second tier as soon as they can, but time will tell whether anything will get sorted.
