Opinion: Charlton Athletic need to keep hold of January signing this summer

Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones worked with Thierry Small at Southampton before bringing him to The Valley earlier this winter.

Charlton Athletic handed the left-back a short-term deal in January running until the end of the season.

Small, 19, has since impressed for the League One side and has helped them rise away from relegation danger over recent weeks.

The Addicks have an option to extend his stay by a further 12 months and need to extend his contract this summer.

Charlton Athletic should keep hold of January recruit

Keeping hold of Small is an absolute no-brainer for Charlton. At the age of just 19, he has bags of potential and can grow and improve in the future.

He is the type of player that the London club can sell on for a fee down the line if he continues to catch the eye.

The England youth international cut ties with Southampton by mutual consent before his switch to the Addicks and that move could turn out to be the making of his career.

He has joined a team where he is guaranteed regular first-team football immediately, whereas with the Saints his chances of breaking into their starting XI were slim due to the options that they had at their disposal in his position.

Small played for West Brom and Everton before moving to St Mary’s but played only once for the Hampshire outfit.

He gained experience out on loan at Port Vale and St Mirren to boost his development and those stints will have helped him.

Charlton took a bit of a gamble on him when they swooped to land him but he has turned out to be a shrewd addition and they need to extend his contract.

Jones’ side won 3-2 at home to Carlisle United last time out and are back in action this weekend with an away trip to Fleetwood Town.
