Leeds United talent could make Birmingham City free transfer move this summer

Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday will both eye a deal for Leeds United winger Ian Poveda this summer, TEAMtalk has reported.

Birmingham City were alongside Sheffield Wednesday in the pursuit of Leeds United ace Poveda in the January transfer window. The Owls secured his signature though, and he’s made a good impact at Hillsborough since.

The 24-year-old is out of contract at Elland Road this summer, so the loan effectively brings an end to his Leeds career. He’s set to be available for nothing at the end of the campaign, meaning this loan stint is a good chance for him to catch the eye ahead of free agency.

It has already been said that Sheffield Wednesday are poised to eye a fresh agreement with Poveda once his loan ends.

Now, TEAMtalk reports that a free transfer move to previous admirers Birmingham City is also a possibility. It will come down to which Championship club is able to offer him the most attractive deal, it is added.

Who is this?

The future battle for Poveda

Poveda’s exciting style of play has made him a popular figure with Sheffield Wednesday. The goals and assists haven’t flowed yet but he’s a constant thorn in the side of full-backs and his tricky dribbling makes him unpredictable.

The Owls’ interest is understandable and having eyed a winter deal, Birmingham City will be hopeful of tempting him to St. Andrew’s next time around.

Staying in the Championship may well prove important for the duo’s bids to sign Poveda. If one was to drop to League One, you would think the Colombian talent would be more inclined to select the second-tier side as his next permanent home.

As it stands, Wednesday are in the relegation zone in 23rd place. They’ve been in good form though and are only one point off the drop, with Birmingham City the side on a slide and perilously placed 21st in the Championship table.
