‘Better with every game’ – Manchester City ace emerges to soften Peterborough United’s big January blow

Peterborough United were hit with a big blow during the January transfer window when Rotherham United opted to recall influential loan man Peter Kioso.

Peterborough United had seen right-back Kioso become one of their most important players over the first half of the season. There are few loan players who end up captaining their temporary club, but that’s what the 24-year-old did.

Such success amid parent club Rotherham United’s struggles made a winter recall feel like an inevitability. Early in the month, the development Posh fans dreaded was confirmed.

The League One side didn’t sign a direct replacement in January. Vontae Daley-Campbell was signed outside the window but Manchester City loan ace Jadel Katongo was entrusted with the spot as Darren Ferguson’s starting right-back and after some tough moments, the 19-year-old has stood up to the task and made a place in the XI his own.

Who is this?

Softening a big blow

Over the first half of the season, Katongo’s action was varied. He found starts in cup competitions but in the league, he only started four times. Otherwise, it was substitute appearances and matches as an unused substitute.

Since Kioso’s recall though, the teenager has played a part in every third-tier game, starting all but one. As touched on before, it hasn’t all been plain sailing for the Manchester City loanee, but recent weeks have shown just what a bright future he has.

Katongo provided two assists in the 5-1 thrashing of rivals Northampton Town and last night, he netted his first league goal. It highlighted just what he brings to the Peterborough United side, carrying the ball forward and linking up with attackers, continuing his run to get into a goalscoring position before calmly finishing beyond Stevenage goalkeeper Taye Ashby-Hammond.

His display earned plenty of praise with Posh legend Gabriel Zakuani among those to highlight his progression.

The performances Katongo has put in recent weeks have displayed his talents well and after the hammer blow of Kioso’s winter recall, he’s softened the hit and proven himself as a perfectly capable right-back with Peterborough United.

It will be hoped he can continue in this impressive vein of form as Posh fight it out for a rise to the Championship. They sit 4th in the League One table and hold a game in hand on all the teams above them.

They face league leaders Portsmouth this weekend and a statement win would cut the gap to the top of the table to six points.
