‘A bad time to play them’ – Middlesbrough vs Blackburn Rovers prediction: The72

The72’s writers offer their Middlesbrough vs Blackburn Rovers prediction ahead of the Championship clash on Saturday afternoon.

Middlesbrough come into this weekend’s clash with Blackburn Rovers looking to maintain their late push for a play-off spot. There’s work to do with five points separating them and 6th placed Norwich City but three straight wins has raised hopes on Teesside.

Michael Carrick’s side defeated Birmingham City in the week to move up to 9th in the Championship table. Riley McGree’s fantastic first-half strike proved decisive in the 1-0 win.

Blackburn Rovers meanwhile are down in 18th. They’re still only three points above the relegation zone and in eight games under John Eustace, the Lancashire outfit are yet to claim a win.

Five draws in seven Championship games has been keeping them just above the bottom three but a win is needed soon to ease their nerves.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

James Ray

“While it has been to be said that Blackburn Rovers have made improvements under Eustace, they’ve still not been good enough to claim a win. They desperately need three points to boost their survival hopes and it would be a huge weight off their shoulders.

Middlesbrough are in fine form now though, so it’s a bad time to play them. It feels like we’ve been waiting all season for Boro to hit their stride and they might have found it again at the perfect time.

“Don’t be surprised if they’re frustrated and Blackburn claim another draw. However, I will be going for a home win, with the gap to the play-off spots shrinking further.”

Middlesbrough are in decent form and are still in with a shout of getting into the play-offs if they can keep their momentum going.

Michael Carrick’s side have won their last games on the spin and I fancy them to get another victory here at home to Blackburn Rovers.

The visitors have been sucked into a relegation battle and could do with getting some more points. John Eustace has drawn six of his first eight matches in charge of the Lancashire outfit and is yet to win.

This one could be a close one but I believe the hosts will just edge it.”
