Wigan Athletic yet to hold contract talks with 27-year-old, deal up in the summer

Wigan Athletic defender Jason Kerr has said he is yet to hold ‘discussions’ about a new deal.

Wigan Athletic have a decision to make regarding the future of the centre-back at the DW Stadium.

Kerr, 27, is out of contract at the end of this season and is due to become a free agent in the summer as things stand.

He has provided this update on his situation, as per a report by Wigan Today:“There’s not been any discussions of that nature so far, all of my focus has been on my football at the moment. I’ve not been back too long so it’s been hard to look too far forward, other than to the next game and try to tick off another one.

“All I can do is keep putting in good performances, and maybe discussions like that will happen in their own time.”

Kerr has had his injury problems this season and has only made eight appearances in all competitions, seven of which have come in League One.

When fit, he is a useful player to have in the squad and is a solid player at the back for Shaun Maloney’s side.

However, although it would be a shame to lose him for nothing, it may be seen as a risk to keep hold of him if he isn’t able to stay injury free.

Wigan signed the Scotsman back three years ago and he has since played 58 games for the North West outfit altogether, scoring three goals and assisting twice.

Prior to his move to England, he played for St Johnstone. The Edinburgh-born man broke into the Saints’ first-team and made 141 outings, helping them win the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup in the same year under their former manager Callum Davidson in 2021.

He also had loan spells away from McDiarmid Park at East Fife and Queen of the South to get some experience.

His future at Wigan is up in the air right now and the club’s immediate focus will be on having a strong end to this campaign.

Maloney’s men are sat in 13th place in the table and were beaten 1-0 away at Wycombe Wanderers last time out. Next up is a home clash against Blackpool this weekend.
