‘Outstanding’ – Released Championship flop proving doubters wrong as Derby County form continues

Derby County picked up another valuable three points with a 2-1 win over Reading last night, and Dwight Gayle was on the score sheet once more.

Derby County kept themselves 2nd in the League One table with a third consecutive win on Tuesday night. It proved valuable too with closest rivals Portsmouth, Bolton Wanderers and Barnsley all winning.

They were made to work for the three points though. After new talisman Gayle opened the scoring with his third in three games, Reading quickly responded as Sam Smith headed home an equaliser only three minutes later.

Just three minutes after they levelled the scores though, the Royals were reduced to 10 men. A second yellow for Andy Yiadom proved to be a telling blow for Ruben Selles’ side as Conor Hourihane went on to net the winner with 20 minutes left on the clock.

The victory was a deserved one for the Rams and there was some strong performances across the pitch.

Once again though, goalscorer Gayle was among the standouts. His display offered much more than just another goal, with Derbyshire Live reporter Leigh Curtis praising him for an ‘outstanding’ performance, earning an 8/10 match rating. He wrote:

“Some really clever movement along the frontline had Reading’s defenders in trouble and was happy to try to stretch the play. Some good link-up play too. Scored a brilliant goal and won a penalty. Outstanding.”

Who is this?

Proving the doubters wrong

There will be a fair few people out there eating their words about Dwight Gayle. The striker joined Derby County on a free transfer after being released by Stoke City, where his tally of just three goals in 50 games saw him go down as quite the flop.

After such struggles with the Potters, few expected the 34-year-old to become the new talisman Paul Warne needed amid a striker shortage. However, a third goal in three games for the League One promotion hopefuls has silenced the doubters and proven that Gayle is still very much a real threat at the top of the pitch.

Warne has got him back to his dangerous best after his Stoke struggles and if he can maintain this form, he could end up playing a huge part in getting Derby County back to the Championship.

Next up for Gayle and the Rams is a crucial home clash with promotion rivals Bolton Wanderers.
