Newcastle United ready to sanction player exit for nominal fee, Southampton keen

Southampton are looking to sign Ryan Fraser on a permanent basis with parent club Newcastle United ready to let him go for a ‘nominal fee’, as per TEAMtalk.

Southampton signed winger Fraser on loan from Newcastle United in the summer. He had fallen down far the pecking order with the Magpies and had no place in the plans for Eddie Howe for the 2023/24 season.

With the Saints, the Scot has proven he can still be a valuable figure. He’s notched eight goals and three assists in 32 games across all competitions, often having a positive impact off the bench.

Given his place in the Newcastle pecking order, the prospect of a permanent move to St. Mary’s seems reasonable.

Now, TEAMtalk has reported that with Southampton interested in holding onto the 30-year-old, his parent club are ready to sanction a move. They’re keen to get Fraser’s wages off the books with a year left on his contract and are likely to let him go for a nominal fee in the summer transfer window.

Who is this?

A feasible move

This certainly seems like a deal that can get done this summer. Fraser isn’t in Howe’s thinking for the future and after a good spell with Southampton, it’s not a surprise that they’re keen on retaining his services beyond the end of his loan deal.

While not necessarily a guaranteed starter, Fraser has still managed a decent contribution in his 32 appearances across all competitions. He’s an experienced presence on either wing and regardless of which division the Saints find themselves in next season, he could be a helpful asset.

He’s had a part to play in their push to win promotion from the Championship and while currently sidelined, Fraser should return to action later this month.

That will be a welcome boost for Russell Martin and co as they look to close the gap to the top two again. The Saints are currently 4th in the Championship table and six points away from Leeds United in 2nd, though they boast a game in hand on all sides above them.
