Blackpool staff member heads to Stockport County in new move

Stockport County have appointed Stuart Irwin as their new Head of Medical Services from Blackpool, as announced by their official club website.

Stockport County have bolstered their medical team with the arrival of the League One man.

Irwin will begin his work at Edgeley Park with immediate effect as Dave Challinor’s side look to gain promotion from League Two this season.

Simon Wilson, who is the Hatters’ Director of Football, has told their website: “I am delighted to welcome Stuart Irwin to the club, who joins from Blackpool in the newly created position of Head of Medical Services.

“In this role, Stuart will oversee all medical provision at the club, across all our teams, working closely with Dr. Amjad Choudry, then specifically Dan Green in the Academy, and Luke Smith at first-team level.”

Irwin studied at Teeside University and started his career in football at Middlesbrough.

He spent seven years as a physiotherapist with the academy at the Riverside Stadium before moving to the North West with Oldham Athletic in 2016.

Irwin had four years as head physio at Boundary Park before moving on to a similar role at Blackpool in 2020. The Tangerines were in the Championship during his time there before they were relegated to the third tier last term.

His new club Stockport have plans to rise up the leagues over the next few years and they are an exciting club to be a part of at the moment.

His arrival strengthens their operations behind the scenes and he will bring in a lot of experience from his previous roles at different clubs.

The Hatters won 1-0 at home to Newport County last time out to boost their automatic promotion hopes after a last-gasp winner by striker Paddy Madden.

They are back in action tomorrow night with a short away trip to Salford City as they look to keep their momentum going. Challinor’s men beat the Ammies in the play-off semi-final last term but lost at Wembley in the final on penalties to Carlisle United.

Stockport are currently sat in 3rd place in the table and are two points above Crewe Alexandra in 4th and three off Mansfield Town at the top.
