‘Beneficial for us’ – International boss explains surprise call up for Cardiff City man

Wales manager Rob Page has spoken out about his decision to include injured Cardiff City man Aaron Ramsey in his squad for the upcoming Euros play-offs.

Cardiff City midfielder Ramsey has been an important figure for his national side since making his debut back in 2008. With important Euro 2024 play-offs coming up, manager Rob Page has called him up to the squad.

However, the 33-year-old has been out of action for the majority of the Championship campaign due to injury. So far this season he has played just eight times for the Bluebirds. Although he has scored three goals during that short time.

He has played just twice since September and so eyebrows were raised when he was called up to international duty. Page has now defended his decision in an interview which appears on Yahoo Sport.

“It’s not been ideal for Aaron. He’s had a few setbacks. Sometimes injuries change from the first instance. They can change overnight, there can be a difference in diagnosis,” he said.

“If there’s a chance of having him involved in the squad I’m going to take it and name him.

“The last two camps we’ve had him in and around the squad, even though he’s not been able to play a part. To have someone of his stature in and around the players is beneficial for us.”

“If he has the potential to give us some minutes off the bench we will use him. He still has a lot to offer.”

Wales are set to play their play-off semi-final with Finland in Cardiff on March 21 and could potentially play against Estonia or Poland five days later in the final. Beforehand, Cardiff City take on Swansea City at the weekend before the international break.

Could impact Cardiff City significantly

Cardiff City could either drastically benefit from Ramsey’s call-up or it could ultimately backfire. If he plays and gets some minutes under his belt this could mean he returns quicker to league action for the Bluebirds.

However, if he is rushed back into contention and plays prematurely before he is fully healed or back to fitness, he risks aggravating the injury and this could be harmful for his chances of playing for Cardiff City again before the season is out.

Page’s justification is solid. To have a player of Ramsey’s experience and ability will certainly help their cause when it comes to aiming to get into the Euros this summer. But the Erol Bulut will be monitoring the veteran’s fitness closely.
