Swindon Town dealt blow with 23-year-old expected to be out for the rest of the season

Swindon Town interim boss Gavin Gunning has said Tom Clayton is ‘likely’ to be out for the rest of the season after an injury setback.

Swindon Town swooped to land the defender back in 2022.

Clayton, 23, has only made only four appearances in all competitions this term, three of which have come in League Two.

Gunning has provided this update on his condition, as per a report by the Swindon Advertiser:“Tom Clayton has had a setback, so he is going to be out again, which is very negative news. [Will he be out for the season?] It looks likely, yes.”

Clayton has had his injury problems over recent times and will be eager to get back to full fitness in time for the next campaign.

Swindon signed him a couple of years ago to bolster their defensive ranks and he played 34 games for them altogether in his first year in Wiltshire, scoring once.

His contract at the County Ground expires this summer and the fourth tier outfit have a big decision to make on his future. He is due to become a free agent in late June as things stand.

Clayton is a product of the Liverpool academy and he rose up through the academy ranks at Anfield. He was a regular for the Reds at both Under-18 and Under-21 level but never made a first-team appearance for the Premier League giants under Jurgen Klopp.

His permanent exit to Swindon gave him the chance to get regular game time under his belt in the Football League last season.

However, he has had bad luck with injuries recently and could have played his last game for the club unless they decide to extend his stay.

The Robins are 18th in the table with nine matches left to play. They are 14 points above the drop zone and 11 off the play-offs.

Gunning’s men lost 3-2 away at Mansfield Town last time out and are back in action this evening against managerless Accrington Stanley.
