Opinion: Hull City should hand Aston Villa man an escape route this summer

Hull City remain in the mix for promotion to the Premier League this season after an impressive campaign under Liam Rosenior.

Hull City are only outside the play-offs in the Championship on goal difference.

The Tigers brought in seven new faces in January and it could have been eight if they would have been able to get a deal over the line for Aston Villa defender Calum Chambers.

They were keen on the centre-back, as per a report by HullLive, and they should go back in for him this summer.

Hull City should swoop for Aston Villa man

Hull are expected to face a battle to keep hold of Jacob Greaves in the next transfer window, especially if they don’t go up. He has been linked with Everton and Tottenham Hotspur.

If the 23-year-old was to leave, the Tigers would need to bring in some defensive reinforcements to fill the void left by his departure.

Chambers, who made three caps for England earlier in his career, would be ideal for the East Yorkshire outfit. He has bags of experience, has spent the past decade playing at the top level and has a point to prove after struggling to make an impact at Aston Villa.

The Southampton academy graduate played for Arsenal from 2014 to 2022 and played 112 games for the Gunners, as well as having loan spells away from the Gunners at Middlesbrough and Fulham.

He moved to Villa Park a couple of years ago but his game time with the Midlands club has been limited.

A move to an ambitious team like Hull would be a sensible choice by the Hampshire-born and he would be guaranteed minutes at the MKM Stadium.

Despite their strong position in the table, the Tigers have been leaky at the back this term. They have the worst goal difference in the top eight in the second tier and need to tighten things up in that department next season, regardless of what league they are in.

Bringing in Chambers makes sense, especially with the club’s positive relationship with Aston Villa. They signed Jaden Philogene from there last summer.

The versatile defender would compete with the likes of Alfie Jones, Sean McLoughlin and Greaves (if he stays) for a place in the starting XI. His contract with Unai Emery’s side runs until 2025, but most signs point towards an exit later this year.
