Intriguing update emerges over Stoke City’s summer transfer budget after disastrous season

Stoke City are set to have a ‘competitive non-parachute Championship budget’ this summer, Stoke on Trent Live reporter Pete Smith has said.

Stoke City have had a frankly disastrous 2023/24 campaign. A complete squad makeover last summer proved disastrous and a change in management has failed to turn around their fortunes as hoped.

Steven Schumacher is fighting to maintain the Potters’ Championship status but little distance remains between them and the drop. The Staffordshire outfit sit 19th in the Championship table, three points clear of the bottom three after beating Preston North End last time out.

Of course, much of the current focus is on the relegation battle. However, there are figures behind the scenes who are determined to put things right, and they need to have one eye on the future to do so.

Recruitment will be key after such a failure in the last summer transfer window. Looking ahead to this summer though, Stoke on Trent Live reporter Pete Smith writes that Stoke City will have a ‘competitive non-parachute Championship budget’ to work with.

Looking for redemption

Stoke City needed the rebuild last summer but recruitment was frankly a disaster. After such a turnover of players, it might not have been a surprise if the budget this time around was pretty limited.

However, with the Potters set to have a pretty competitive budget to work with, it will be hoped they can right some of their wrongs and bring in some high-quality players at the Bet365 Stadium.

First of all though, they need to stay in the Championship. Schumacher has had his critics amid their continued struggles so it will also be interesting to see if he is the manager entrusted with freshening up the ranks and leading a new chapter with the Potters.

A repeat of summer 2024 would leave Stoke City in a frankly dire situation, so recruitment will need to be meticulous to instil some confidence in their loyal supporters once more.
