Bolton Wanderers’ free agent stance emerges amid blows to 27-goal duo

Bolton Wanderers will not be dipping into the free agent market for a striker amid Dion Charles and Victor Adeboyejo’s injuries, Ian Evatt has stated.

Bolton Wanderers are embroiled in the fight for automatic promotion from League One. They sit 3rd in the League One table as it stands, a point behind 2nd placed Derby County and six off leaders Portsmouth.

However, they’re set to be without key strikers Charles and Adeboyejo for a crucial spell. There is no timescale over the former’s knee injury as it stands and the latter looks unlikely to return before the end of the campaign.

Amid the double blow, Bolton Wanderers boss Evatt has now been asked about the possibility of dipping into the free agent market at this late stage in the season.

Evatt issued a clear answer on that though, declaring to The Bolton News that the Trotters will be backing Aaron Collins, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Cameron Jerome to step up as the stand-in talismen. When asked, he replied:

“No – we just have to back the ones we have got available, and that is Aaron – good job we signed him – Jon and Cameron.

“I think all three have shown what they can do in recent weeks. Jon and Cameron have impacted off the bench, over the last two games in particular, and Aaron is starting to get to grips with what we want and need from him.

“We are seeing more consistency in his productivity and hopefully that can continue for the rest of the season.”

A chance to step up

The absences of Charles and Adeboyejo are a real blow. They’ve been the go-to men up top this season, managing 27 goals between themselves across all competitions.

Bodvarsson and Jerome have made up the supporting cast, appearing 40 and 31 times respectively but with most of them coming off the bench. The Icelandic target man has managed six goals in 10 cup appearances but 30 League One outings have yielded just two goals.

Jerome meanwhile has scored just once across all competitions with 21 league outings yet to return a goal.

Winter signing Collins has six goals and 11 assists overall but only a goal and two assists have come in Bolton Wanderers colours. These injuries offer him the chance to nail down a place in the side though and really kick on after joining from Bristol Rovers.

Evatt will need the trio to step up and assume the role as lead goalscorers, otherwise the absences of Charles and Adeboyejo could ultimately cost them a long-awaited rise back to the Championship.
