Rotherham United man suffers new injury blow after long absence, return date unknown

Rotherham United wideman Shane Ferguson has suffered an injury setback and manager Leam Richardson has not set a return date at this stage.

Rotherham United have been without Northern Ireland international Ferguson for much of this season. He returned to Championship action in February but was forced to withdraw from the thrashing at Coventry City early on.

The 32-year-old duly missed the heavy defeat to Norwich City too. This new absence comes off the back of a nine-month spell on the sidelines and now, it seems Ferguson will be out for another stint.

Speaking to the Rotherham Advertiser, Millers boss Leam Richardson stated that Ferguson is set to be absent through a new blow. He stated that the new concern is related to the hernia problem that had kept him out but there is no estimated return date at this early stage.

He said:

“Bless Fergie, he’s had a rough season. He should have trained and played more than he has done.

“I feel for him. He’s a great guy and he worked so hard to get back. But he’s had a bit of a setback. We’re not really sure on a length of time for his absence.

“He’s gone back to see a specialist over an ongoing problem.”

Who is this?

Looking ahead…

Time will tell just what the outcome of this upcoming specialist visit is, but it could be that Ferguson has played for Rotherham United for the last time if this new setback is going to keep him out for an extended spell.

The experienced left-sided player sees his Millers contract expire at the end of the campaign. Given his injury problems and limited action, some may be surprised if he’s offered new terms to remain at the club beyond then too.

The hope will be that Ferguson can be involved again sooner rather than later though. Be it as a wing-back, full-back or winger, he’s proven himself as a solid asset in the Championship and League One before.

Overall, he has four goals and 10 assists to his name in 76 appearances for Rotherham United. It remains to be seen if he gets the chance to add to that total though.
