‘Really important’ – Birmingham City coach on why midfielder left on temporary basis in January

Birmingham City’s Head of Academy coaching James Brayne has said Brandon Khela left on loan for Ross County in January to ‘further his development’.

Birmingham City let the youngster move up to the Scottish Premiership on a temporary deal earlier this winter.

Khela, 19, is due to return to his parent club this summer and has made six appearances for Ross County so far.

Brayne has opened up about the midfielder’s departure in the January transfer window and has said, as per a report by the Press and Journal: “The challenge point for Brandon this year was about playing men’s football, and trying to obtain some minutes in a league.

“The fact he was able to make his debut for us was brilliant, but the opportunity to go to Ross County and further his development was really important.

“He made his debut at Celtic Park which is an amazing experience, and something that can’t be replicated in the academy game. For him to move away and get that exposure is testimony to the kind of character he is.”

Khela’s move to Ross County will boost his development and will help him get some more experience under his belt.

His chances of first-team football at Birmingham right now are slim in the Championship due to the abundance of options that they have at their disposal in his position already.

The teenager has risen up through the academy ranks of the Midlands outfit and has been a key player for them at various youth levels over recent years.

He penned his first professional contract back in 2022 and made his senior debut a year later in a Carabao Cup clash away at Cheltenham Town.

Khela has since played once more for the Blues in a league clash against Huddersfield Town and will be eyeing more opportunities in the future.

For now though, his focus will be on getting as many minutes with Ross County as he can.

He was signed by the Highlands club by their former boss Derek Adams. However, he has now left them and ex-Cardiff City and Wigan Athletic man Don Cowie is in caretaker charge.

The Staggies are 11th in the table and are six points above Kilmarnock.
