Opinion: West Brom must be alerted to 27-year-old’s Sheffield United contract situation

West Brom are still unsure of what division they’ll be in come the next transfer window, but plans will be in mind for the summer regardless.

West Brom currently sit 5th in the Championship table, as they have done for much of the campaign. They’re five points ahead of 7th placed Hull City and many would back them to hold onto a play-off spot.

Of course, the promotion fight remains the priority for Carlos Corberan and co. However, those behind the scenes will have to have an eye on recruitment plans for the summer, with potential targets lined up well in advance to allow for efficient business.

Corberan has had a tough time dealing with the striker situation this season. Josh Maja and Daryl Dike are both long-term absentees while Brandon Thomas-Asante has also faced time out.

So, with Callum Marshall only on loan, it would be wise to target another striker this summer. And, amid recent reports, one man they should have their eyes on is Sheffield United’s Oli McBurnie…

Who is this?

Poised for a move

McBurnie has been in and out of the Sheffield United side somewhat this season, be it due to injury or suspension. However, when available he’s usually played, but still finds himself heading for the exit door ahead of the end of the campaign.

The 27-year-old sees his contract expire and writing on his Patreon, reporter Alan Nixon says McBurnie is one set to depart.

It means he’ll be available as a free agent and that will likely alert a number of Championship clubs. West Brom should be among them in a bid to bolster their attacking ranks.

McBurnie’s time at Sheffield United hasn’t been the easiest. He’s not been able to kick on as hoped since a prolific breakthrough with Swansea City but he’s managed 27 goals in 154 games and has 91 appearances worth of Premier League experience to his name. Dropping back down to the Championship – a league he has previously found goalscoring form in – could be ideal for the striker.

He’s a physical presence at the top of the pitch and links up the play well, bringing other attackers into the game before more often than not getting himself into the box to get in goalscoring positions.

As a potential free agent, he could be a great addition for Corberan. It would add valuable depth to his West Brom ranks and the free transfer signing would be both low cost and low risk for the club.
