The72’s writers offer their Birmingham City vs Middlesbrough prediction ahead of the Championship clash on Tuesday evening.

Birmingham City come into their midweek with Middlesbrough following a disappointing late defeat away from home against Millwall, losing 1-0 at the Den on Saturday.

The Blues created plenty of chances but failed to really test their opposition goalkeeper, ultimately coming undone when Japhet Tanganga powered his header into the bottom left corner in the 90th minute. The result meant they dropped to 21st in the table, one point above the drop zone.

Middlesbrough, on the other hand, won their last match 2-0 against QPR on their travels as they recorded back-to-back wins in the Championship following back-to-back losses beforehand.

The game was goalless at the break, but second-half efforts from Emmanuel Latte Lath and Marcus Forss wrapped up three points for Michael Carrick’s men. They moved up to 11th as a result, eight points off the play-off spots with this Birmingham clash their game in hand.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

Jacob Hackett

“Boro look to have ironed out the issues that had previously held them back, and there is now an outside chance that they can still creep back into the top six conversation.

“The Blues’ late blow against Millwall will have dented their hopes of staying up, with a big result on Wednesday now needed to once again gain ground on the bottom three.

“Without a win in their last four, it is not looking too pretty for the hosts. I can see Middlesbrough taking advantage and piling further misery onto the West Midlands outfit.

“I am going for a win of narrow margins for the visitors on this occasion.”

Middlesbrough will need to do all they can to try and close the gap to the play-offs further and a win here will just about keep their hopes alive. They’ve still got a lot of ground to make though, so unfortunately for them I think it’s not going to happen.

“Nonetheless, I do see them winning here. Birmingham are in a tough spot and games like this are a big opportunity to put some more distance between themselves and the drop.

“However, I think Boro have got a bit of confidence now and could go on a bit of a run.”

Birmingham City vs Middlesbrough prediction: 0-2
