3 Sammie Szmodics replacements Blackburn Rovers should eye amid Premier League links

Blackburn Rovers attacking midfielder Sammie Szmodics has starred this season, and his fantastic goalscoring form is drawing Premier League attention.

Blackburn Rovers needed a new talisman after Ben Brereton Diaz’s exit last summer but few would have expected Szmodics to step up to such an extent. In a struggling Championship team, he’s notched 27 goals in 39 games across all competitions.

Over the weekend though, trusted reporter Alan Nixon revealed on his Patreon that his form is drawing admiring glances. Premier League duo Brentford and Luton Town have both looked at the Irishman.

With that in mind, Blackburn Rovers could do with considering potential replacements. Here, we put forward three they should keep in mind…

Harvey Knibbs – Reading

In a challenging season for Reading, Knibbs has been one of the shining lights. Be it on the wing, as an attacking midfielder or striker, he’s been a real star for the Royals, managing 15 goals and seven assists in 44 games.

The club’s financial struggles could make them prone to player sales and Blackburn Rovers are among those who should target Knibbs. He would be a great addition even if Szmodics remains.

Thierno Ballo – Wolfsberger AC

Ballo spent time in Chelsea’s academy but he’s now enjoying his best season in Austria with Wolfsberger since joining in 2021. He has nine goals and four assists in 20 games and interestingly, his deal is up this summer.

The 22-year-old’s potential resale value could appeal to Rovers given their financial situation and he could be excited by another chance to prove his abilities in England.

Pavel Sulc – Viktoria Plzen

Czech attacking midfielder Sulc could be a great replacement for Szmodics. Like the Blackburn Rovers star, he’s comfortable as a no.10 or further forward in the striker role, offering goal threat in both roles.

He has 18 goals in 33 games for Czechia’s top-flight club and given his wealth of experience at only 23, Sulc could be ready for an eye-catching move.
