28-year-old training with Charlton Athletic after Premier League release, reporter says

Charlton Athletic have brought former player Tariqe Fosu in to train with the club, reporter Richard Cawley has said on X.

Charlton Athletic had winger Fosu on the books for two years from 2017 to 2019. He managed 11 goals and 10 assists in 65 games for the club and has since played for Oxford United, Brentford, Stoke City (loan) and Rotherham United (loan).

However, the 28-year-old has not been in action this season. He’s been without a club since leaving Brentford at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, but it could be that he’s found a route back into the game.

As shared on X by South London Press reporter Richard Cawley, Fosu has returned to The Valley to train with Nathan Jones and Charlton Athletic.

He states that there is no suggestion of the linkup leading to a contract offer at this point. That said, it could be an intriguing matter to keep an eye on given his long spell as a free agent and experience in the Championship and League One.

Back to The Valley?

Fosu could certainly be an eye-catching addition to the Charlton Athletic ranks. He’s been out of the game for some time, so may need a period to get up to speed.

The club will have to weigh up whether it’s worth bringing him in in that case, as by the time he’s match-ready, it could be that the season is over. However, a player of Fosu’s quality could be a real asset for Jones.

The Ghanaian international can play on either wing or as an attacking midfielder. He’s returned 20 goals and 14 assists in his 88 third-tier games over his career but has also featured 89 times in the Championship.

Time will tell if the training stint comes to anything, but Fosu could find a route back into the game sooner rather than later.
