Watford man given green light to head out on loan until the summer

Watford goalkeeper Jonathan Macaulay has linked up with Hemel Hempstead Town on loan, as announced by their official club website.

Watford have let the stopper head out on a temporary basis to get some game time under his belt.

Macaulay, 18, has been on the books of the Championship side since 2021.

The Hornets have confirmed he has moved to the National League South on a deal until the summer.

Macaulay’s move to Hemel Hempstead is a chance for him to get some senior experience.

He was handed a new two-year deal by Watford last summer which shows he is highly-rated by the Hertfordshire outfit.

The England youth international, who has also represented Sweden in the past, has been a regular for the Hornets’ Under-21’s side this season under the guidance of Charlie Daniels.

He will now be looking to make the number one spot his own at Vauxhall Road between now and the end of this term to help boost his development.

The youngster is due to return to Vicarage Road later this year and the club will have a decision to make on what to do with him in the next campaign, whether that be keep hold of him or send him somewhere else.

He temporarily leaves behind a Watford side who have been in dire form over recent times. They were beaten 2-1 at home by Coventry City this weekend.

Valerien Ismael has now been sacked and has been replaced by Tom Cleverley on an interim basis.

The Hornets are currently sat in 13th place in the table and are seven points above the drop zone with nine matches left to play. Next up is an away trip to Birmingham City as they look to return to winning ways.
