Travis, Vale and more: What the summer could hold for Blackburn Rovers’ loaned out players

Blackburn Rovers have struggled in spells this season and now face a battle to stay up despite the recent appointment of John Eustace as their new boss.

Blackburn Rovers have struggled in spells this season and now face a battle to stay up despite the recent appointment of John Eustace as their new boss.

Blackburn Rovers currently sit 17th in the Championship table, only two points above the relegation zone with just 10 games remaining before the 2023/24 campaign draws to a close.

Climbing up the table and away from the bottom three will of course be Rovers’ main priority, though eyes are already bound to be cast towards the summer and what Eustace plans to do with his squad regardless of what division they find themselves in. Some decisions can be made early, however, especially regarding those currently on loan away from Ewood Park.

Here, we look at what the summer could hold for the six players currently on loan away from Blackburn Rovers

Lewis Travis

Blackburn Rovers captain Travis is now part of the Ipswich Town squad who are looking to shock the division by securing automatic promotion in their first season since coming up from League One.

Eustace has gone on record stating that he is a fan of the 26-year-old, so talks are bound to be held in the summer regarding his future. He is one that Blackburn Rovers will be keen to retain unless an enticing offer comes in for his services, with two years still left on his deal.

Jack Vale

Having spent the first half of the season with Lincoln City, Vale failed to impress and subsequently found himself heading to Motherwell on loan in January.

The 23-year-old has scored three goals and registered one assist in Scotland to go alongside his two goals and two assists earlier in the campaign for Lincoln. Out of contract next summer, Rovers may look to cash in on the striker before he is able to leave on a free. If not, he should be handed an extension sooner rather than later.

Joe Hilton

After making just one appearance for Blackburn this season, which came in a 4-3 victory over Walsall in the Carabao Cup, goalkeeper Hilton was shipped out on loan to Macclesfield in February.

The 24-year-old is another who sees his contract expire next summer. He hasn’t been at the level to make a Rovers breakthrough yet, so may face another loan move if he does not permanently depart this summer.

Tom Bloxham

Another winter departure, 18-year-old winger Bloxham is currently plying his trade with League Two outfit Harrogate Town.

He has made four appearances in the fourth tier since joining Harrogate, totalling to just over an hour of first-team football. Similarly to Vale and Hilton, his deal runs out in 2025. The likelihood is that the teenager will face another loan spell.

Who is this?

Ethan Walker

Fellow winger Walker was previously sent to Morecambe on loan at the beginning of the campaign, but moved down a division to join up with National League side Oldham Athletic in January.

Unlike the others on this list, the 21-year-old is set to see his contract expire this summer. Having pulled up no trees in the fifth tier, it feels doubtful that he will be offered new terms at Ewood Park. It would be a surprise if the youngster was not released.

Georgie Gent

20-year-old Gent has been with Motherwell for the entirety of the current campaign, of course joined by Vale in January, and has made 22 appearances for the Steelmen so far.

The young Englishman has registered one goal and three assists in all competitions whilst regularly featuring in the Scottish Premiership. Under contract until 2025, Gent may be able to battle for a place in the Blackburn Rovers squad next season, although another loan move would not be a shock. Before then though, his talents could warrant a contract extension.
