‘Loving it here’ – Barnsley loan favourite sheds light on Middlesbrough future

Middlesbrough loanee Liam Roberts is remaining fully focused on the task at hand with Barnsley amid continued uncertainty over his Boro future.

Middlesbrough sent goalkeeper Roberts out on loan last summer, sanctioning a move to Barnsley. Having played only five times for Boro, he’s since become a regular at Oakwell, and he cuts a popular figure too.

Seven clean sheets in 28 League One games might not be the most eye-catching total but his passion and shot-stopping abilities saw him quickly endeared to supporters. He’s been one of the division’s standout ‘keepers too, playing a key role for Neill Collins and co.

Coming into the summer though, there are questions over his future.

Of course, the loan with the Tykes only runs until the end of the campaign, but his contract with parent club Middlesbrough is up in the summer too. Now, the 29-year-old has been quizzed on the matter.

As quoted by the Barnsley Chronicle, Roberts stated that he’s remaining fully focused on the task at hand with Collins and co amid uncertainty over his future. He said:

“I haven’t really heard anything.

“I am loving it here and concentrating on what we’re doing. My personal situation is nothing to do with it.

“My focus is getting Barnsley promoted. My time isn’t up yet and hopefully it isn’t up in the future.”

Who is this?

Ending on a high

After his successful loan at Barnsley, Roberts will be determined to ensure the season ends as a successful one for all, rather than just on a personal level. The fight for the top two is still very much alive and amid a continued run of impressive form, the Tykes are in a strong position.

They sit 4th in the League One table as it stands, with three points separating Barnsley and the top two with a game in hand on all of those above.

From a Middlesbrough perspective, only time will tell what they opt to do with Roberts. His performances this season have shown he is deserving of regular football and if that isn’t going to be offered on Teesside, his future will be best served elsewhere.

If he is to leave at the end of his contract and become a free agent, Roberts could be a great pickup in the summer transfer window.
