‘It’s quite obvious’ – Swansea City man speaks out on future with contract running down

Swansea City attacking midfielder Jamie Paterson has told BBC Sport that he is looking to remain at his current club beyond the summer.

Swansea City signed Paterson in August 2021 and he has gone on to make almost 100 appearances for the Swans since his arrival. He has proven his worth and has been an important player and regular fixture in the first-team fold this season.

With Swansea City in 15th place in the table and just five points above the relegation zone their main concern will be putting some distance between themselves and the bottom three.

Therefore, players coming to the end of their contracts at the end of the campaign won’t necessarily be at the forefront of the club’s mind. Nevertheless, it is likely their attention will soon turn to such matters with Paterson a possible priority.

His deal expires in June later this year, and speaking to BBC Sport he confirmed he wishes to remain at the Swansea.com Stadium beyond his current contract.

“It’s quite obvious I would want to stay. There is no reason for me to want to move away,” he said.

“I love being at this club, I have the whole time, with the new manager coming in as well, it gives you even more confidence. There would no reason for me to go elsewhere but at the same time, it’s not up to me.”

Should Swansea City offer him a new deal?

With seven goals and four assists to his name this season, he is the club’s second-highest scorer in all competitions. This alone could be a huge reason why he should be offered a new contract.

Despite Swansea City’s lowly league position and struggle for form, Paterson has been a consistent performer in the team. If they can get some new arrivals through the door in the summer and tie the attacker down to a new deal, this could prove to be a strong window for them.

However, now aged 32 if the club feel they want to go in a younger direction a new deal may not be offered to the player. It is hard to see this given his goal contributions and performances, but it is certainly a possibility.
