Huddersfield Town cast eyes over ex-Derby County man following Sunderland trial

Huddersfield Town are taking a look at Cameron Ashia on trial following his exit from Derby County last summer, as detailed on their official club website.

Huddersfield Town played the youngster in their Central League clash against Mansfield Town earlier this week.

Ashia, who can play as an attacking midfielder or forward, cut ties with Derby at the end of last season and has since been weighing up his options.

The Terriers have confirmed he started for their B team against the Stags as they won 2-0 with first-half goals by Pat Jones and Conor Falls.

Huddersfield’s aren’t the first Championship side to cast their eyes over Ashia in this campaign. Their fellow second tier club Sunderland had him on trial earlier this winter, as per a report by the Sunderland Echo.

The Black Cats gave him some Under-21’s minutes against Southampton back in November but didn’t end up offering him a deal.

Ashia rose up through the academy ranks at Derby and was a regular for the League One outfit at various youth levels.

He was a regular for their Under-18’s last season and made 23 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals and assisting five times.

However, he left Pride Park in late June and hasn’t been able to find a new home since then.

He will be eager to show what he can do to Huddersfield and the Yorkshire side have a decision to make regarding to sign him.

The prospect could be a useful option for their B team with the possibility of breaking into their first-team down the line.

For now, the Terriers are aiming to avoid relegation. They are currently sat in 21st in the table and are outside the drop zone on goal difference with 10 games left to play.

Andre Breitenreiter’s side face promotion chasing West Brom at home this weekend as they look to bounce back from their 1-0 loss away at Cardiff City last time out.
