‘Have had a look’ – Neil Harris shares free agent stance amid Millwall striker shortage

Millwall have had a look at the free agent market for options up top but Neil Harris states they don’t see anyone as a viable option to join the club.

Millwall are currently fighting to retain their Championship status, and they’ve managed to take positive steps towards that since the return of Harris. The Lions have taken seven points from a possible nine, leaving them two points clear of the drop and 18th in the Championship table.

The work is far from done for them though, and they’ll have to contend with a striker shortage in their survival bid.

Michael Obafemi netted in the draw with Blackburn Rovers earlier this week but is the only natural striker available to Harris at the moment. Both Kevin Nisbet and Tom Bradshaw are sidelined and neither are expected to return before the end of the season.

However, after taking a look at the options available, Millwall will not be bolstering their attacking ranks with a free agent signing. As quoted by the South London Press, Harris confirmed the club’s recruitment team ‘have had a look’, but no one at home or abroad are deemed suitable.

He said:

“The recruitment guys have had a look at the personnel that might be available, from this country and abroad, and as it stands there is nobody that is going to be able to come in and impact the group at the level that we need.

“It’s always a tricky one at this stage of the season – unless someone has been released from their contract before the January deadline and they have been training regularly.”

Making it work

While a free agent addition probably wouldn’t go amiss, Harris is right. Signing free agents at this stage of the season is tough, as many will have been out of action since last summer, so by the time they’re up to speed, the campaign will be over.

Obafemi will be determined to take the chance to become the go-to man up top over the final stages of the season. His Lions loan hasn’t been the most fruitful but he’s scored goals at this level before and could become a vital asset for Harris and co.

If he isn’t to claim a starting spot, there are versatile attackers who can operate up top. Ryan Longman and Zian Flemming started in the week and both have spent time as a striker before, while Aidomo Emakhu and Duncan Watmore can also operate through the middle if needs be.
