Birmingham City hoping stalwart is fit after Millwall trip after return to training

Birmingham City’s interim boss Mark Venus has said Marc Roberts will ‘hopefully’ be available for selection this weekend.

Birmingham City are back in Championship action with an away trip to The Den to face Millwall.

Roberts, 33, has been injured recently but has returned to training now.

Venus has provided this update regarding his condition, as per a report by BirminghamLive:“Marc has trained today. We have to see how he reacts to training, hopefully he will train again tomorrow and he will hopefully be fit for selection. He is on the training ground so that’s good.”

Birmingham City selection latest

Roberts has made 13 appearances so far this season, 11 of which have come in the league.

His experience could come in handy as Birmingham look to avoid relegation to League One. He also add more competition and depth to their defensive department.

His contract with the Midlands outfit expires at the end of this campaign and he is due to become a free agent in late June as things stand. The Blues have a decision to make as to whether to keep him this summer or let him go for nothing.

In the meantime, their immediate focus will be on the remaining 11 matches of this term. They are sat in 20th place and are only a point above the drop zone.

However, they have a game in-hand on teams around them like Huddersfield Town, Stoke City and Sheffield Wednesday. Birmingham drew 1-1 away at promotion chasing Hull City last time out which should give them confidence.

Lee Buchanan played centre-back against the Tigers so if Roberts if able to get himself fully fit for Millwall, he would be an option for Venus.

The veteran has been on the books of the Blues since 2017 and has played 194 matches for them altogether, finding the net on seven occasions. He has also played for Yorkshire pair FC Halifax Town and Barnsley in the past.
