3 strikers Derby County should eye this summer amid contract situation

Derby County are currently focused on their push for automatic promotion, but those behind the scenes at the club will certainly be casting an eye on the Rams’ summer business already.

Derby County are currently focused on their push for promotion, but those behind the scenes will certainly have an eye on the Rams’ summer business already.

Derby County currently sit 3rd in League One, one point behind 2nd place Bolton Wanderers after Ian Evatt’s side struck a late equaliser against Barnsley on Tuesday evening. The Tykes, sat 4th in the table, are just two points behind the Rams and boast a game in hand with the race for the top two now really heating up.

Regardless of what division Paul Warne’s side find themselves in next season, there is bound to be a shake up in the final third as James Collins, Martyn Waghorn, Dwight Gayle and Conor Washington all see their Derby contracts come to an end this summer.

With that in mind, here are three affordable striker options that the Rams should have their eyes on ahead of the summer…

Stephen Humphrys – Wigan Athletic

With his current contract also set to expire this summer, Wigan Athletic talisman Humphrys may well be a potential candidate for a Pride Park switch ahead of next season. Able to play centrally and out wide, he could be a solid option for the Rams.

The 26-year-old has scored 11 goals and registered five assists in all competitions for the Latics this season and could provide a cheap deal for Warne’s men if his contract is not renewed at the DW Stadium.

Devante Cole – Barnsley

Following the trend of strikers who are set to see their current deal expire in July, Cole of Barnsley could also provide a fantastic option for the Rams. The 28-year-old striker is also able to play on either flank and is enjoying a brilliant campaign for the Tykes so far.

With 17 goals and three assists to his name this season, Cole would be an excellent pick-up for Derby County, especially if he does become a free agent. His wealth of League One experience could prove crucial if the Rams are not to get promoted this campaign, although he is now perhaps ready for the Championship step-up.

Jonson Clarke-Harris – Peterborough United

Yet another striker whose contract is set to expire this summer, it seems Clarke-Harris is destined for an exit come the summer. He has somehow remained with the Posh through two transfer windows however, despite strong links of a departure throughout the season.

The 29-year-old has scored 10 goals and registered one assist this campaign, although his playing time has understandably dwindled amid his contract situation. He has been the third tier’s top goalscorer twice in recent years, and would no doubt be a top acquisition for Derby County if they were able to pounce.
