Wigan Athletic sign ex-Bolton Wanderers talent previously eyed by Blackburn Rovers

Wigan Athletic have confirmed the signing of youngster Leo Graham on a one-year professional contract following his Bolton Wanderers departure.

Wigan Athletic have had to lean on their academy ranks a fair bit in recent seasons. Financial problems have seen youngsters thrust into the limelight perhaps earlier than expected, though matters are far more stable after last summer’s takeover.

Still though, the Latics will be keen to maintain a steady flow of youngsters heading up to the senior ranks. They could be talents recruited from elsewhere or players who have been on the books for some time.

Now, a new addition has been made to the League One club’s academy setup.

Following a successful trial period, Wigan Athletic have confirmed the signing of attacker Leo Graham. The 17-year-old has been with the club since the turn of the year and has earned a one-year professional contract as a result following his departure from Bolton Wanderers.

It seems the Latics aren’t the only ones to have taken a look either. As per his Transfermarkt, Graham started for Blackburn Rovers U21s in a PL2 clash with Wolves in December, playing all 90 minutes in a 2-1 win.

Latics’ academy graduates

Following the confirmation of his deal with Wigan Athletic, Graham will be hoping to follow the well-trodden path to the first-team at the DW Stadium.

Some have been and gone and moved onto bigger things elsewhere, but Maloney’s ranks boast some standout youngsters from the academy. Sam Tickle, Charlie Hughes, Baba Adeeko and Thelo Aasgaard have all found regular roles in the side this season, while Chris Sze is another frequently in the first-team picture.

If Graham can get on that trial, there’s a good chance he can enjoy a fruitful time with the Latics. A strong first year may well earn him an extension to his contract as well, so he’ll be keen to kick on after landing his deal with the League One side.
