Southampton loanee to be assessed after training blow with Juventus

Southampton attacker Carlos Alcaraz has endured a difficult start to life at current loan club Juventus and this could have just got even worse.

Southampton made the loan switch to Serie A giants Juventus in January in a deal which many would have deemed surprising at the very least.

He joined the Saints in January 2023 and played a big role in their ultimately in-vain attempt at beating the drop in Premier League, and in the first-half of the subsequent campaign in the Championship.

Having made the switch to Juventus, he has played four times, registering one assist during that time. However, he has made just one start, and his performances have been less than impressive.

To make matters worse the 21-year-old attacker has now picked up a hamstring injury in training. The club’s website announced the news, reporting that he is set to be assessed over the next couple of weeks.

Does Alcaraz have a future at Southampton?

His current deal at Southampton runs until 2028 and having signed for a reported fee of £12m, the Saints will want to recoup most, if not all of the figure paid to Racing Club a year ago.

Reports state that his current loan at Juventus includes an option to make the move permanent for a fee of €49.5million. However, the Italian side are unlikely to trigger this clause and so if he does leave St. Mary’s it probably won’t be for Juventus.

He has bags of potential and given he is just 21 years old, there will be plenty of interest in the player. Moving to Juventus for six month will of course rise his stock even more too. But it is likely Alcaraz will only play for Southampton again if they secure promotion.
