‘Earmarked for a job’ – Harry Redknapp shares advice for Portsmouth boss John Mousinho

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho has been advised to remain at Fratton Park by ex-Pompey boss Harry Redknapp, who has tipped him to draw interest from elsewhere.

Portsmouth have enjoyed a fantastic season, sitting at the summit of the League One table for much of the campaign. That’s where they remain too, six points clear of 2nd placed Bolton Wanderers with 10 games left to play.

They’ve had to work their way through adversity too. John Mousinho has had several big injuries to contend with but regardless of that, they’re currently on a run of nine League One games without defeat and on this trajectory, they’ll make a long-awaited return to the Championship as champions.

Such success has seen Mousinho draw plenty of praise but somewhat surprisingly, concrete interest in his services has not emerged. However, former Pompey boss and legendary manager Harry Redknapp anticipates that he could be ‘earmarked for a job’ elsewhere.

Speaking to BetVictor, Redknapp advised the Portsmouth boss to remain at Fratton Park. And, if he does move on, avoid heading to Southampton like he did in 2004. He said:

“John Mousinho is doing a great job at Portsmouth so he could be earmarked for a job elsewhere, even if he does get the club promoted. But he’s at a really good club at Portsmouth – he’ll be ok there if he sticks with them.

“As long as he doesn’t go to Southampton he’ll be ok! Nobody would be that stupid to move from Portsmouth to Southampton would they – you’d have to be off your head! But he wouldn’t do that like me I’m sure.”

Who is this?

Admiring glances inevitable?

While it hasn’t been publicly reported that Mousinho has had interest, that’s not to stay he hasn’t drawn admiring glances. And, given how he’s performed with Portsmouth in his first managerial role, it wouldn’t be a surprise if other clubs were looking at him as a possible hire.

That could even prove to be the case if Pompey are promoted, as Redknapp said himself.

However, as the former Portsmouth boss also said, the 37-year-old looks to have a great thing going at Fratton Park. A talented squad, devoted fan base and fantastic home stadium makes for a fantastic environment for a young coach to take on their first job, and Mousinho has thrived in the position over the last year or so.

If promotion is secured this season, the manager and the club will be hoping the only way is up from there.
