8-goal/assist winger rejected Swansea City move this winter

Swansea City were among the clubs who saw Excelsior winger Couhaib Driouech turn them down in the January transfer window, the player has revealed.

Swansea City have had some tough transfer windows in recent times. Recruitment hasn’t always been spot on in South Wales and they’ve not had much to work with in the way of a transfer budget either.

That said, there has been cash to spend this season, and the Championship club were able to bring in some new faces in the winter too. Brazilian winger Ronald and Przemyslaw Placheta both signed permanently while Charles Sagoe Jr arrived on loan.

It gave Luke Williams some much-needed options out wide and some valuable pace. Now though, it has emerged another winger was on their radar in the winter transfer window.

Speaking to Dutch outlet Ziggo Sport (quotes via Voetbal International), 21-year-old Excelsior talent Couhaib Driouech has said Swansea City were among the multiple clubs keen on him in January. However, he turned down the chance to leave in favour of staying in the Netherlands.

He said:

“We canceled foreign clubs because we preferred to stay in the Netherlands. The clubs came from England, France and Italy. It involved four clubs: Lorient, Swansea City, Como and Lecce.

“I did not see that as the right next step.”

Who is this?

One to return for?

Moroccan talent Driouech certainly seems like a promising player for the future. A return of four goals and four assists in 21 Eredivisie games is a respectable one from him this season, and overall, he’s got 12 goals and 12 assists in 92 games for Excelsior.

The interest in his services suggests that are other clubs alongside Swansea City who see him as a talented player too. However, given the signings of Ronald and Placheta, he may not be needed in South Wales anymore.

Perhaps Driouech was initially targeted but his transfer stance saw the Swans turn to their other targets. Or, maybe he was on the radar as a potential target but ultimately one that was not pursued.

While one eye will be on the transfer plan at Swansea City, Williams and co will be looking to put some more distance between themselves and the relegation zone.

The Swans sit 15th in the Championship table after claiming seven points from the last nine available, but they’re only five points clear of the drop still.
