Portsmouth new boy could make debut in crucial promotion tie

Portsmouth new boy Lee Evans could have to wait until the clash with Peterborough United to make his debut for the club, reporter Andrew Moon has shared.

Portsmouth recruited midfielder Evans at the start of this month, bringing him in following the termination of his Ipswich Town contract. He had been with the Championship club since the summer of 2021 but amid a nearing return to fitness, they decided to let him go and explore options as a free agent.

Since his move to Pompey, Evans has been continuing to work towards full fitness. He will provide a much-needed option in the middle of the park amid a persisting shortage at Fratton Park.

Now, an update on just when the Welshman could make his Portsmouth bow has emerged.

As per local reporter Andrew Moon, Evans has shared that he hopes to be fit to be involved against Burton Albion next Tuesday, but accepts a debut against Peterborough United on Saturday 16th is more likely. Of course, this in turn confirms he will likely not be involved against Blackpool this weekend.

With Portsmouth sat at the top of the League One table with a six-point gap and a resurgent Peterborough United five points off the top two with a game in hand, the tie between the two could prove crucial in the promotion picture.

A timely boost

Evans’ gradual return to fitness means he hasn’t been able to have an immediate impact after joining Portsmouth. However, having him available as another option for the run-in will be of great value to John Mousinho and co.

The 29-year-old has experience of fighting for and winning promotion and has played over 150 League One games alongside 122 appearances in the Championship. That pedigree will be of great value both on and off the pitch as Pompey look to finally return to the second-tier.

The sooner he is available, the better. However, with Marlon Pack and Owen Moxon holding down starting spots, Mousinho can afford to gradually work Evans back to 100% before hopefully handing him his debut in the big game against Peterborough United.
